Veterinary homeopathy selects a highly diluted remedy to match a detailed picture of the individual animal: its temperament, its symptoms, what makes it better or worse, and its history. The system was founded by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann around 1796 on the principle of "like cures like", the idea that a substance producing certain effects in a healthy body can be used, in minute dose, for a patient showing a similar pattern. Remedies are prepared by repeated dilution and vigorous shaking, a process Hahnemann called potentization. It is practiced by some veterinarians and by trained homeopaths who work with a vet, and is used alongside conventional care for chronic and constitutional concerns.
What to expect: A first consultation is long, often 60 to 90 minutes, covering behavior, preferences, physical signs, and history in detail. The practitioner gives a remedy and a schedule, then reassesses.
