Functional Medicine
A systems-based approach that looks at patterns across lifestyle, nutrition, and physiology.
Functional medicine looks at the body as an interconnected system rather than a collection of isolated parts. Practitioners spend significant time on history-taking and often use detailed laboratory testing to understand underlying physiological patterns. The focus is on root causes — nutritional, hormonal, environmental, and lifestyle factors — rather than symptom management alone.
A systems-oriented approach looking at root patterns across physiology and lifestyle.
What to expect: Initial consultations are typically 60–90 minutes — significantly longer than standard medical appointments. History-taking is detailed. Follow-up may involve laboratory testing. Recommendations often address diet, lifestyle, supplements, and sometimes prescription support. Functional medicine works best alongside, not instead of, primary care. Initial investigation and plan development typically takes 2–3 appointments. After 3–6 months of following a protocol, a good functional medicine practitioner will review your data and symptoms with you to assess what is working and what needs adjusting.
Good fit for: You want to understand root causes rather than manage symptoms, You are motivated to make significant lifestyle changes, You have concerns that have not been fully addressed by conventional care, You are willing to invest time and often cost in comprehensive investigation
Explore for: Persistent fatigue, brain fog, or low energy without a clear diagnosis, Digestive concerns that haven't resolved with standard care, Hormonal or metabolic patterns that feel off, A desire for a more thorough investigation of contributing factors, Wanting to work with lifestyle and nutrition alongside any medical care
Not the right fit if: You need acute or emergency medical care, You are looking for a quick diagnosis and prescription, You are not ready to engage with diet and lifestyle changes, You want to replace rather than complement your primary care
How to choose a practitioner: Look for practitioners with formal functional medicine training through IFM (Institute for Functional Medicine) or equivalent Confirm their clinical background — functional medicine is practiced by MDs, NDs, DOs, and others with varying scopes Ask what their intake process looks like and what forms of testing they use
