HRV Biofeedback
A tool-based approach that uses physiological feedback to support regulation skills.
HRV Biofeedback uses sensors to measure heart rate variability in real time, giving you live feedback on your nervous system's state. By learning to influence your HRV through breathing and other techniques, you can build the capacity to regulate stress responses more effectively. It is one of the more evidence-backed approaches in this space, with research supporting its use for stress, anxiety, and performance.

What to expect: Sessions are typically 50–60 minutes. You'll be connected to sensors (usually a finger clip or chest strap) that feed data to software you can both observe. You'll practice specific breathing patterns (often resonance frequency breathing at around 6 breaths per minute) while watching how your HRV responds. Most practitioners recommend a series of sessions to build lasting skill. Most programs recommend 8–12 sessions to build meaningful skill. Have a conversation with your practitioner after 4–5 sessions about your HRV data and what changes you are noticing in daily life — this helps you assess whether the investment is producing real-world benefit.

How to choose a practitioner: Ask about their training — look for formal biofeedback training through BCIA (Biofeedback Certification International Alliance) Confirm the equipment being used is clinical-grade rather than consumer wearables A good practitioner will combine the biofeedback with coaching on how to apply regulation skills in daily life
