Sandtray Therapy
Symbolic, experiential therapy using miniatures and a sand tray to access material that's hard to reach through talk alone, used with both children and adults.
Sandtray therapy uses a tray of sand and a collection of miniature figures, people, animals, structures, symbols, as a medium for creating scenes that represent inner experience, often bypassing the need to find exact words for what's going on. A client arranges figures in the sand with minimal direction, and the therapist observes and gently explores the scene's meaning together with the client afterward. It's used with children, adolescents, and adults, and while it shares some conceptual ground with expressive arts and play therapy, it has its own specific training lineage and technique.
A symbolic, hands-on therapy that uses miniatures and sand to give shape to hard-to-articulate experience.
What to expect: You'll typically be invited to select figures and arrange them in a tray of sand however feels right, with minimal direction from the therapist. Afterward, you and the therapist explore the scene together, what the figures represent, how they're arranged, what feels significant. There's no right or wrong way to build a tray, the process is intentionally open-ended and exploratory.
Good fit for: You find it easier to represent experience symbolically than to describe it directly, You're curious about a hands-on, creative therapeutic process, You're seeking support for a child, teen, or yourself using a non-verbal-forward method
Explore for: Experiences or feelings that are difficult to put directly into words, Wanting a hands-on, symbolic, and non-linear way to explore what's going on internally, Support for a child, teen, or adult who engages more easily through play and imagery than direct conversation, Processing loss, transition, or trauma through symbolic rather than narrative means
Not the right fit if: You strongly prefer direct, verbal talk therapy without creative or symbolic techniques, You want a highly structured, protocol-based treatment
How to choose a practitioner: Ask about their specific sandtray training, for example through the Sandtray Therapy Institute If they also offer Sandplay Therapy (a related but distinct, more specific lineage), ask them to clarify the difference Ask about their experience with your age group and specific concern
