TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises)
A structured series of exercises designed to help release physical tension and support regulation.
TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a self-directed exercise process developed by David Berceli. It uses a series of simple exercises designed to activate the body's natural tremoring mechanism — a neurogenic shaking response that some researchers believe helps discharge accumulated stress and tension. It is typically taught in a series of sessions so you can practice independently.
A structured movement practice to help the body release held tension.
What to expect: Initial sessions are typically 60–90 minutes and include instruction in the exercise sequence, guidance in activating and managing the tremoring response, and discussion of your experience. Most practitioners recommend a series of guided sessions before practicing independently. Some people find the shaking uncomfortable at first; pacing and stopping are always within your control. Most practitioners recommend 3–4 guided sessions before practicing independently. After that initial phase, check in with your practitioner about what you are experiencing and whether self-practice is producing the results you hoped for.
Good fit for: You want a body-based practice you can eventually use independently, Tension feels chronic and physical rather than primarily emotional, You are open to an unconventional approach, You want something that complements rather than replaces other care
Explore for: Chronic physical tension, especially in the hips, lower back, or legs, Stress that feels held in the body and does not release with rest, Interest in a self-use practice for ongoing regulation, Complementary support alongside therapy or other body-based work, Feeling chronically tight or wound up
Not the right fit if: You have certain neurological or psychiatric conditions (check with your provider first), You have a history of seizures, You want clear scientific evidence of mechanism — the research is still developing, You are in acute crisis or significant emotional distress
How to choose a practitioner: Look for a Certified TRE Provider — the certification indicates completion of the training program Ask about their experience working with people who have similar concerns to yours A responsible provider will screen for contraindications and teach you how to regulate the intensity
